Learning Spanish abroad in Toluca-Metepec, Mexico: It is one of the new language immersion programs offered by Mexico Spanish Lingua School. Participants of this program are encouraged to do exploration of the snow-capped Nevado de Toluca volcano and surrounding mountain camps and lakes, the archeological sites (Malinalco and Teotihuacan), the large complex of thermal waters and its numerous spa centers, as well as the large zoo of Zacango, one of the best in Mexico.

Toluca-Metepec is an urban area in Central Mexico, located 40 miles (70 Kms) West of Mexico City. Toluca is the capital city of the State of Mexico, one of the thirty-one states of the republic of Mexico. Toluca-Metepec enjoys a renovated international airport, mostly serving flights to Houston and NewYork, but with easy connection to other American and Canadian destinations.

Metepec is an adjacent city to the east of Toluca. Metepec is a more commercial center and is famous for its clay artesans and unique pottery. Some attractions for tourists include the El Zocalo of Toluca and the El Zocalo of Metepec (El Zocalo = Central Park). The zocalo of Toluca is a larger complex comprising several buildings and plazas, such as the Justice Palace, the botanical garden, the True Cross Church and several museums. At Morelos Theatre several events take place and Central Cultural Mexiquense is a larger art center and library.

Toluca and Metepec were founded within the valley La Marquesa Mountains and Nevado de Toluca volcano. This volcano has two lakes in its ancient crater. Popular activities at the volcano park include hiking, biking, jogging and other sports. The road to the crater lakes inside the volcano is in great condition.

A few miles away from Toluca-Metepec there is a lake, Lake Avandaro (more popular known as Lake of Valle de Bravo, or simply “Valle de Bravo”). The town Valle de Bravo next to the lake is an up and coming shopping area and has a variety of restaurants, shops and hotels. It is a wonderful weekend resting place with arts & crafts and food markets, gourmet natural food stores, art galleries and upscale craft shops. The lake and its surroundings are popular destinations for people interested in biking, hang-gliding, sailing, water-skiing, hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, and other recreational activities.

At a very short distance from Toluca, there is considerable large number of archeological sites, out of which Malinalco and Teotihuacan are the most predominant ones. Malinalco was the last city built by the Aztecs, and it was not finished because of the Spaniard arrival and subsequent Spanish conquest of Mexico. Teotihuacan was one of the largest pre-Colombian cities in the Americas and it was a major source of influence for many Mesoamerican indigenous groups. Teotihuacan is visited for thousands of tourists each year, particularly for its massive pyramids, including the Pyramid of the Sun, one the largest in the world.

The spa town of Ixtapan de la Sal and the Zacango Zoo. A few miles away from Toluca-Metepec there is a large hot springs area where at several spots the water flows as veritable slow rivers. Many spa hotels and spa centers provide therapies and spaces to enjoy the hot springs and thermal waters bath. In the outskirts of the city of Toluca there is a very large zoo, with a surprising collection of animals from all over the world and the facilities both for animals and visitor are quite spacious and well preserved.
